Motshekga says action being taken following 'jobs for cash' report

A number of steps have been taken after the release of a report into the selling of teacher posts by unions, governing bodies and departmental officials. That's according to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

The Minister had been responding to questions in the National Assembly yesterday - the first sitting since the break for the Local Government Elections. 


Motshekga says short and long-term interventions are needed.


"On performance management, the introduction of contracts for principals and deputy principals - in line with the DBE policy - in order to enhance accountability of educators, so the quality management system for assessing the performance of school-based educators was adopted at the Education Relations Council, and it will be implemented in 2017," she said.

She says one of the major issues is the need to amend legislation related to the SA Schools Act and the Employment of Educators Act.


"In so far as it relates to the powers of the school governing bodies and the appointment procedures that are concerned. And this seems to be a very thorny issue, and therefore we're patiently consulting and discussing with the affected stakeholders - especially the parents bodies."
