Mozambique braces itself for cyclone Dineo

The wind has picked up significantly in the Inhambane area where tropical cyclone, Dineo is expected to hit later tonight.

Founder of Moz Info, Carlos Carvalho, says the Mozambican government has issued a warning to people living along the coast to take precaution.

"All indications - even from NASA - are that the areas of Tofo, Barra and Inhambane fall within the tracking of this massive cyclone," Carvallho says.

He adds: " The eye of the cyclone will reach the beach tonight."

According to the official warning by the government of Mozambique, the critical times are from lunchtime on Wednesday to this evening, when winds and gusts of up to 200 kilometres per hour will hit these areas.

"It is very difficult to reach people in the rural area but I think our government has done what they can to warn people," Carvalho says.

He adds that they are also heavily reliant on Non-Governmental Organisations operating in Mozambique as well as the government who will offer food and shelter to anyone who are affected by the cyclone.

"The government alongside NGO's will assess the damage once the storm has passed.

They have all been placed on standby," he says.
