Municipal employees arrested over cable theft in Polokwane

The municipality loses millions of rands annually as a result of cable theft, adversely affecting services to the community.

Four municipal employees in Limpopo, attached to the electrical department of the Polokwane municipality, were arrested yesterday in the afternoon in connection with suspected cable theft. 


"The municipality views this matter seriously as cable theft is a very serious criminal offence and prevalent in the municipality," said Thipa Selala, Media and Stakeholder Relations at the Polokwane Municipality.

"The matter is in the hands of the police for further investigation, but an internal investigation will be conducted and if there are any findings against these employees, a disciplinary process will proceed," he added. 


Selala noted that the municipality loses millions of rands annually as a result of cable theft, adversely affecting services to the community.


"Members of the community are urged to be vigilant over their service infrastructure and report any suspicious activity to the police," he said.
