Makwarela provided an update on the election of a new mayor on Tuesday following the resignation of the DA’s Randall Williams last week.

“The date for the election of the new executive mayor is to be determined by the speaker of council. The consequence for this turn of events is that the mayoral committee has been dissolved with effect from midnight the 13 February 2023,” Makwarela told reporters.

“I will therefore make sure as the speaker of the capital city of our country that the mayor will be elected in due course to make sure that the priority of the city is at the forefront.”

Williams resigned following adverse findings by the auditor-general’s office.

Williams subsequently handed in two resignation letters, one which made his resignation effective immediately and one which took effect at the end of the month.

Makwarela said a legal opinion obtained from an external law firm has confirmed that Williams’ first resignation letter was valid.

This means the city’s Finance MMC Peter Sutton has been installed as acting mayor.
