This comes amid the ongoing demand for free higher education that saw various universities across South Africa close their doors.

UP representatives and student leaders will meet on Monday to plan the way forward and discuss possible resolutions to the current situation.

While students remain adamant that fees must fall the university postponed tests for especially engineering students.

"With reference to the Engineering Test Week starting on Monday 10 October 2016, the following: UP Senate decided this afternoon that, in the light of inputs from various parties, campus will not open for academic activities on Monday 10 October 2016," the university said in a message to students."

"You will also receive this communication in other forms from UP. UP Executive will start a process of engagements with the broad student community (a number of smaller engagements have already taken place during the past week, and more are already scheduled for tomorrow and the weekend) on Monday," the message read.

Details around the scheduled meeting is yet to be announced and communicated to all relevant parties before Monday.

"This process will take a few days as we also need to keep engaging with the broader UP plans around classes, tests and exam dates," the university said.
