Friday evening’s crash at OR Tambo International Airport was caused by a broken towbar, which saw the aircraft veer off and hit a parked FlySafair plane.

“The SAA wing tip and the Safair empennage section were damaged. No passengers were onboard either aircraft at the time,” says SAA spokesperson Vimla Maistry.

The SAA aircraft has been grounded and the extent of the damage to the wing of the aircraft is being assessed.

The national carrier informed several authorities about the crash including the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

A flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town was canceled as a result of the crash.

SAA CEO John Lamola lamented the impact on seat availability, adding that they are “committed to taking extraordinary steps at ensuring that both the aircraft are brought back to service as soon as possible”.
