Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says more work needs to be done to overcome the legacy of apartheid.
Lesufi's department is hosting a three-day lekgotla in Boksburg to assess progress made since the start of the administration.
Gauteng remains one of the top performers despite being burdened with urbanisation and a shortage of schools.
Lesufi says he's committed to transforming the education system in Gauteng, starting with the introduction of ICT in the classroom and the development of teachers

"Until we check the condition of employment of all our educators, we are not going to move the education to where we want to take it. Township education systems can't be a training centre that are rich that come and poach the best and leave the worst," says Lesufi.
Lesufi says its critical to deal with the legacy of the past..
"There are still people who believe that naming a school Hendrik Verwoerd is still relevant in this era. What is at the centre, which is non-negotiable with me, is that non-racialism is the future. You can't postpone it."
