NPA: Insufficient evidence to prosecute protesting Wits students

Five students were set to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after they were earlier granted bail at the police station.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has declined to prosecute the six students who were arrested during Wednesday’s protest at Wits.
Five students were set to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after they were earlier granted bail at the police station.
One student was released on R1000 bail.
They were charged with public violence and malicious damage to property.

Students took to the streets on Wednesday to demand that the university allow indebted students to register for the coming academic year.
Spokesperson for the NPA in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonondwane says there was insufficient evidence to prosecute.
The malicious damage to property case has been referred back to the police for further investigation.
