NPA says Zephany Nurse kidnapper showed no remorse
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the woman who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on
Monday for kidnapping Zephany Nurse showed no remorse for her crime.
Nurse was kidnapped in 1997 at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town while her mother was asleep, days after she was born.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the accused sees herself as a victim.
“She does not believe she committed a crime, she sees herself as a primary victim and believes her only crime is that she raised Zephany and does not see what pain she caused the Nurse family,” he said.
She was sentenced to 14 years, of which 4 have been suspended for five years.
Ntabazalila says the 10 year sentence handed down in the Western Cape High Court fits the crime.
“Kidnapping in the Western Cape, as was indicated in this trial, is a serious crime,” he said.
