NSPCA opens case against Malema for animal cruelty

The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has opened a criminal case against EFF leader Julius Malema.

The animal rights organisation is accusing Malema of violating the Animals Protection Act.
The case relates to a video of the EFF leader in which he is seen struggling to slaughter a cow as part of the party's 10th-anniversary celebrations in July.
The red berets held a ceremonial slaughter in Magaliesburg, where animals donated to the party were prepared for the official ceremony at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
The EFF received 100 cows as donations from the public.
The NSPCA's spokesperson Jacques Peacock said they believe Malema caused unnecessary suffering to the animal.
"It is evident from the video that the animal endured significant distress. After a thorough investigation into the contraventions depicted in the video, the NSPCA has laid criminal charges against Mr Malema in accordance with the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
“The NSPCA will work closely with law enforcement and the (National) Prosecuting Authority to ensure a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of the case," said Peacock.
