Gauteng police arrested one person for public violence at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield campus on Monday.
Workers affiliated with the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) have been on strike for more than two weeks in support of their demand for a 7% wage increase.
The institution is only offering a 4% increase.
On Monday, the police’s Public Order Policing Unit fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse protesting workers.
Spokesperson Dimaktso Nevhulwi says police will continue to monitor the situation.
"The Public Order Police responded to a situation whereby the employees of the institution were protesting. The protesters reportedly started disrupting classes, and the police used rubber bullets and stunt grenades to disperse them.
"One person was arrested for public violence, but no injuries have been reported. The police will continue to monitor the situation."
