One dead, 13 injured in KZN crash

One person died and 13 others sustained serious injuries when the taxi they were traveling in left the road and rolled several times down an embankment, coming to rest on its side, paramedics said on Saturday.

The accident occurred on the M7 west-bound at Hans Dettman off-ramp just after 4pm on Friday, Rescue Care Operations Director Garrith Jamieson said in a statement.

"Rescue Care and Meditech paramedics arrived on scene to find chaos," he said.

"A taxi had lost control on the sharp bend and rolled down the embankment ejecting all of its passengers in the process."

Thirteen patients sustained serious injuries and more ambulances and advanced life support units were called to assist.

The 13 patients were stabilised on scene and transported by various ambulances to Durban hospitals for further care.

"Unfortunately one person… had sustained critical injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do for her; she was declared deceased on the scene.

"At this stage it is unclear what caused the taxi to roll over. However, the Durban SAPS {SA Police Service] accident unit was in attendance and will be investigating further," he said.
