At least one person has been hospitalised due to injuries suffered during an elephant attack near the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga.
On Wednesday, the South African National Parks confirmed the escape of six elephants from the park.
The big animals were later spotted in the Mkhuhlu area outside Hazyview, where they were confronted by locals who attempted to attack the animals, leaving one person hurt.
SANParks spokesperson Ike Phaahla has called on the community to allow authorised officials to deal with matters relating to wildlife as some of the animals may be dangerous.
"The animals that escaped yesterday fortunately made their way back into the park at night,"
"This after our MTPA colleagues, assisted by our rangers, had tried during the day to drive them back, but there had been blockages on that road, which resulted in chaotic scenes.
"We called in the relevant authorities to control the crowds, but we are happy to report that they are back in the park."
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga Tourism Agency spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube said the patient was admitted to Matikwana Hospital.
"The report that we got is that he is recovering well in the hospital. He was attacked when the community were trying to attack this animal."
