Pandor hits back at US embassy 'stockpiling' alert
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor has described the US Embassy alert to its citizens to stock up on food and water amid power cuts and possible riots as surprising and odd.
"I find it rather surprising and odd; I don't recall such alerts being issued when California had similar black outs and outages to South Africa,
"I find it rather odd. There have been many of these surprise warnings and none of what is warned about has come to fruition."
The latest security warning by the embassy was issued earlier this month, after President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster over energy and Eskom.
In an advisory on its website the embassy warns its citizens of impact on water availability, food supply, safety, internet connectivity, cell phone network coverage, fuel availability and residential security features.
"This affects private residences, businesses, municipal lighting, traffic lights, and hotels. Further, ongoing conditions have led to an increase in protests and demonstrations, and in some cases civil unrest, throughout the country," said the US embassy in a statement.
