Parts of Tshwane without power after Watloo Substation fire
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Several suburbs in the Tshwane metro have been affected by a major power outage after a fire broke out, just after midnight, at the Watloo Substation.
The fire started at the 1B transformer, leading a disruption in electricity at multiple substations across the city.
Affected areas include Pyramid, Pumulani, and Koedoespoort substations are currently experiencing power outages.
This incident came shortly after a 132kV power trip at the Njala Substation on Thursday night, further compounding the metro's electricity challenges.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the city’s emergency services responded swiftly to the fire, and technical teams are on-site conducting damage assessments.
He added that at this stage, there is no estimated time for the full restoration of power to affected areas.
"Residents have been urged to remain patient as city technicians work to determine the extent of the damage and implement repairs," he said.
