PCR tests now R500 at Lancet & Ampath - Competition Commission

The Competition Commission has announced a reduction in the
price for the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests as the country battles the
fourth wave of infections.
Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele held a media briefing on Sunday.
Bonakele announced that two of largest private pathology laboratories in SA, Ampath and Lancet Laboratories have agreed to reduced pricing.
“In terms of the agreement Ampath and Lancet have agreed to reduce the price of COVID-19 PCR tests from about R850 or which-ever prevailing prices, to no more than R500 (VAT inclusive) per test with immediate effect.”
Bonakele explained that the fight against Covid includes an array of safety measures, including PCR test.
“The fight against the virus is multipronged, inclusive of vaccination, social distancing, wearing of masks, and testing.
“Covid-19 PCR tests have become essential in the fight against covid -19. While there are other forms of testing, the PCR tests are required by doctors and various institutions, including for travel purposes.”
The price reduction follows an investigation by the Commission which was triggered by a complaint lodged by the Council for Medical Schemes in October 2021, that the prices were too high.
Bonakele added that the case against one other major laboratory, Pathcare, to reduce its prices is still ongoing.
“We expect other stakeholders including Pathcare who have not yet settled the matter as well as other Laboratories that they will come forward and resolve the matter. I should also mention that the litigation against Pathcare continues.
