An investigation has been launched into dogshow judges and breeders after authorities discovered 45 dogs in a house in Benoni, east of Johannesburg.
Last week Thursday several animals with serious health problems were seized from a home of a well-known show dog judge and breeder.
Benoni SPCA spokesperson Vicky Finnemore says upon searching the home more animals were found.
"SPCA inspectors were initially told by the owner that there were only fifteen dogs on the property, and roughly that number of healthy-looking French poodles could be seen in the garden. However, when the owner refused the inspectors entry into her home, suspicion was aroused resulting in the SPCA Inspectorate returning a day later with a search warrant."
Finnemore adds that the dog breeder’s inventory was confiscated.
"We are intending on prosecuting the owners of the animals as well as anybody that may have been implemented to any animal cruelty we found on that day." says Finnemore.
Pictures posted online sparked outrage with donations sent for the animals.
