PODCAST: Will South Africans give ANC another chance in May?

When President Cyril Ramaphosa succeeded Jacob Zuma as leader of the ANC in 2017, Ramaphosa vowed to rid the governing party of corruption and factionalism and instil a servant-leadership culture.

Ramaphosa was re-elected as ANC leader at the party’s National Elective Conference in December 2022, where he reiterated his promise of renewal.

He labelled the divisions in the ANC as “a dire threat” to the party, which could spell the end of the 112-year-old liberation movement.

But many tainted ANC leaders remain in office, even after the commission of inquiry into state capture laid bare the extent of the corruption during former president Zuma’s tenure and the central role played by the ANC in emptying the country’s coffers.

Record unemployment, sluggish economic growth, the slow pace of workplace transformation, an electricity crisis, and growing concern over the country’s water supply have all dimmed the light on the continent’s oldest liberation movement.

This begs the question:

How did we get here? And how much of it is the ANC’s fault?
