Police have interviewed ‘a number of people’ on AKA and Tibz killing - Mkhwanazi

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says the police have already interviewed a number of people in Gauteng and KZN in relation to the killing of Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his friend Tebello’ Tibz’ Motsoane.

The two were shot and killed in Durban on Friday night.

Mkhwanazi, who was answering questions from the media during the release of the latest crime statistics in Cape Town, said while the details of the case can only be addressed with the family, a few people have already been interviewed.

"I am sure South Africans will know that we can’t discuss in detail the cases that we are investigating, especially because the only people that are supposed to get feedback are the families of the deceased. We can't be telling them through the media what is happening with our investigations.

“We have not arrested anyone yet, we have however interviewed a number of people both in KZN as well as in Gauteng," says Mkhwanazi.

He said the investigation is ongoing.

"There are many people that we have obtained statements, and we have collected cell phones, the viewing of the videos is still continuing, the analysis of the material that is there is continuing. So we are still putting our evidence together in order for us to be able to have a solid case going forward.

“The identification of those that were seen on videos that you might have seen on social media is something that we cannot disclose now, but we have got an idea as to who might those people be, so we are continuing with the investigation.”

Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele said while he has not been to the crime scene, he has been in contact with the families.

"We don't really go for cameras, there are many places where we go without cameras, but mostly where we go, we are usually invited by communities but also to find and link up with communities.

“There was no need of going to this one because when we received the information at 11 pm, that this happened we were together on the phone with this provincial commissioner all the time talking about the team that he has put together, led by Brigadier Cele one of the best police we have, he is one of the top investigators.

“The next morning I was phoned by the family, requesting a few things to be done and one was on the phone with the family until 6 Saturday when the post-mortem was finished and Sunday, I spoke at length with the father of AKA.

“So, why would I have to go to the crime scene when we have taken on board the family and they are very much satisfied?" says Cele.

He added: "I have a beautiful message from the family I am not going to read it, but it is a beautiful message coming from the father of AKA.”

Motsoane's friends and family gathered at Sacred Heart College in Observatory, Johannesburg on Thursday for his memorial service.

Meanwhile, Forbes's memorial service will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday.

The service will start at 15:00 and is expected to end at about 18:00.

Both AKA and Tibz will be buried in private funerals on Saturday.
