The office of Deputy Minister of Police Bongani Mkongi, has condemned the storming of a Military Base of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) by what it calls 'heavily armed lunatics'.

A group of suspects overpowered the guards at the entrance to the Base in Khayelitsha on Thursday night.

"Police understand that it's not confirmed they took 4 rifles. However, police are still assessing the exact number of weapons stolen", said Siyabulela Tom, spokesperson for the deputy minister.

He adds they expect security to be heightened, especially at the various military bases.

"I'm sure the Minister and Deputy Minister of Police will be engaging with the Ministry of Defence to look into the issues of especially security so that in future we will not have such incidents again."

Tom said the criminals showed a total disregard for law enforcement agencies.

"These acts of criminality won't be tolerated. Such incidents really cannot happen. Military bases are places where South Africans should feel safe".
