Police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says the officer was shot and killed during a shootout following a robbery.

"An unknown number of suspects entered the local shop at Makhuvha village outside Giyani and robbed the owners of an amount of cash and groceries at gun point," says Mojapelo.

Mojapelo says police responded to an emergency call.

"On arrival, they realised the suspects had already left the scene and immediately made a follow-up. A suspicious looking vehicle was then noticed along the road leading to Phalaborwa and when the police stopped it, a shootout ensued and in the process one of our members was fatally wounded," says Mojapelo.

Two suspects had been arrested earlier with the help of residents and the other suspect was arrested immediately after the shootout.

The arrested suspects will appear before Giyani Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder and armed robbery.
