Police officer shot and killed in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who shot and killed police officer in Kanyamazane, near Mbombela.


Police say the man seen in a viral video waving a gun at police is mentally unstable and the “firearm” is fake.

The off-duty police officer was shot while at at a local shop on Friday.


Forty-one-year-old Sergeant Nhlanhla Petros Sigage was stationed at Pienaar Police Station.


Police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says the motive for the killing is unknown.


"Two gunmen arrived, and they then bought some bottled water. Suddendly the two men reportedly drew firearms then blatantly shot at Sergeant Segage at a close range. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.


"The lifeless body of the SAPS member was found with multiple gunshot wounds and he was unfortunately certified dead at the scene meanwhile the other man who was injured during the incident was taken to a medical facility for treatment.


"A case of murder with an additional charge of attempted murder was opened for investigation," he said.
