'Police should be everywhere' says Cele on visit to Ennerdale

Police Minister Bheki Cele says police officers should be deployed to all four corners of the country, regardless of any terror alert.

Cele made the comments in Ennerdale, where he visited the families of the six men who were shot and killed on Sunday.

His comments come in the wake of the terror alert that was issued out by the US Embassy in South Africa, last Wednesday.

"These things of people dying and being gunned down happen without any terror alert. There was no terror alert in Alex, there was no terror alert in Orlando nor in Katlehong.

"So it would be very presumptuous for all of us to say it happened because it was skewed. It happened because it has happened before. We are saying that police must be everywhere whether there is an alert or not."

The Finetown shooting, which left seven people dead, has sent shockwaves through the country.

It is alleged that four unknown suspects shot and killed street vendors who were selling chicken feet after they tried to rob them.

Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela said the department has put together a team of officers to investigate the matter.

"We have put together a very good team of CI crime intelligence, our detectives from serious and violent crime. We also have our forensic investigators who will work around the clock with our community intel structures so we can round up all those people who have done this."
