POLL: Does NG Kerk's decision on homosexuals bother you?
Updated | By Suné du Toit
Controversy is raging over the church's decision to acknowledge same-sex unions...
The decision was applauded by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well as by some congregations around the country. There are now fears, however, that the church could split following the decision taken by the General Synod on October 9.
The synod decided, with a 64% majority, that they will allow homosexual unions and homosexual ministers to be ordained in the NG Kerk.
The church's moderator Ds Nelis Janse van Rensburg said they have been involved in this discussion for decades and that they understood that the debate could not be prolonged without making a decision.
Janse van Rensburg said that he will be very disappointed if the DRC were to split.
"We have processes within our church order which allows for further discussions...the decision we took also asked that the process should go on, it is an open debate," he said.
