Possible legal steps against parents who 'married off' teenager
Updated | By Jacaranda FM news
Legal action could be taken against parents who allowed their teenage daughter to marry a traditional healer.
The 17-year-old girl has been taken away from her 42-year-old husband, with whom she had been staying since March.
Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Nandi Mayathula Khoza, made the announcement at a press briefing this morning.
"We believe the 17-year-old will return to her husband as soon as she turns 18, as she has expressed her intention to continue staying with him."
It is alleged that the man also paid lobola of R25 000 to the teenager's family.
"The man says the teenager's mother misled him into believing that she is 18-year-old, but investigations would reveal if the marriage was forced or not," Khoza says.
