Presidency: SONA disruptions ‘undermine parliamentary decorum’

The Presidency has described as unfortunate threats by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to disrupt President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

Ramaphosa's spokesperson Khusela Diko was speaking to the media outside the Tuynhuys in Cape Town on Tuesday.

In January, EFF leader Julius Malema gave President Ramaphosa until the end of that month to come clean about his relationship with Bosasa.

In an answer to a question in the National Assembly last year, Ramaphosa said his son Andile Ramaphosa received money from Bosasa as part of his consultancy work.

The amount was R500 000.

Ramaphosa subsequently corrected the answer in a statement, saying the money was not meant for his son, but for his campaign to become ANC president ahead of the party’s national conference at Nasrec.

Diko says any disruption will undermine the decorum of Parliament.

"Any threat to disrupt the State of the Nation Address is undermining the institutions that have been set up to deal with challenges. It’s our hope and our wish that Sona be accorded the decorum and the dignity that it deserves.”

Diko says President Ramaphosa has met with Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to clarify the matter and that she should be given time to investigate his dealings with Bosasa.
