Press Freedom Day: Journalist Shiraaz Mohamed missing for four months
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
As the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day, kidnapped journalist Shiraaz Mohammed's family has spoken out.
Mohammed was kidnapped in Syria, while on his way to the Turkish border in January.
His ex-wife, Shirley Brijlal, says she thinks the freedom of the media is under threat.
"Both Shiraaz and I are journalists and I had an incident last week during a protest in Lenasia where we were shot at. I had a stun grenade shot right at my head. I think it is ridiculous that it happened without provocation," says Brijlal.
Brijlal says she is quite emotional thinking about the issue.
Meanwhile, Brijlal says they are still waiting on any news about Mohamed.
"Sadly, there has been nothing new that I can talk about now. I am meeting with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to get an update and they also have nothing new to say and it's really worrying. It's absolute silence and it's going to be four months now. It's pretty hectic for us as his loved ones to be able to deal with this, the not knowing it the thing that is most disturbing," says Brijlal.
