Probe into unnatural deaths at Thohoyandou Juvenile Correctional Centre

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) has launched an investigation following the "unnatural" deaths of two inmates at the Thohoyandou Juvenile Correctional Centre in Limpopo.

The JICS spokesperson Emerantia Cupido says two male inmates - aged between 19 and 20 - were declared dead in hospital a week ago.


Cupido says investigations have been launched into the incident that led to their deaths.

"JICS will continue with the investigation, which will include interviewing all witnesses and we will await the Department of Correctional Services and SAPS reports," adds Cupido.


Cupido says she cannot divulge the findings of any of the preliminary reports at this stage. 


"Once the investigation has been completed, a report with findings and recommendations will be furnished to the Ministry of Justice, the relevant Parliamentary committees and DCS," she concluded.
