Public Works and SIU to clamp down on corrupt officials
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Over 250 cases of corruption have been uncovered at the Department of Public Works.
The Department’s acting director-general, Imtiaz Fazel, told reporters in Pretoria on Thursday that the department will approach the courts in an attempt to recover more than R1.2 billion.
Fazel said more than 200 employees have already been suspended or dismissed and that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is pursuing criminal charges.
"The department is recovering R300 million from landlords who have over-leased the department."
The SIU revealed that some 2‚500 officials in the department were implicated in cases of conflict of interests and that some are directors in private companies that traded with the department.
