R41 horror crash claims at least 13 lives
Thirteen people have been killed on the R41 in Randfontein after a taxi collided with a truck on Friday afternoon.
Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says twelve of the deceased were travelling in the taxi.
The truck driver was also killed in the crash.
"The cause of the accident is still unknown," he says.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the death toll could change.
"The number of people killed might change as paramedics are still arranging the body parts of the deceased," she says.
The road was closed for several hours as authorities worked on clearing the scene.
The transport ministry says it's concerned with the number of accidents which involves public transport vehicles.
Department spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says: "The minister enjoined the services of the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Road Accident Fund to investigate the crash and assist the families of the deceased."
