Ramaphosa to G7: Africa must produce own fertilisers
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
President Cyril Ramaphosa says that Africa will propose to the Group of Seven nations that it become self-reliant by producing its own fertilisers.

Ramaphosa made the comments at the G7 summit in Germany on Monday.
He said this would be similar to the vaccine proposal at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are now going to work on a proposal that we hope will be supported by the G7 countries. Certainly one or two of them said that they would support the proposition. To make developing economic countries on the African continent more self reliant. So we are going to put a proposal similar to the one we put up with vaccines.
“We want African countries to be self-reliant when it comes to fertiliser production and we are going to be working with the G7 countries to see how we can reach that level.”

The Russia-Ukraine crisis has seen two of the biggest producers of fertiliser encounter severe supply chain disruptions due to the ongoing conflict.
Not only are the two countries the biggest producers of fertiliser, but are also the biggest producers of grain globally.
This has led to a severe spike in food prices across the globe which have also been severly impacted by the rising fuel prices.
