Ramaphosa: No decision yet on reopening of schools

With the return of most people to work and the resumption of most industries after the festive break, there’s lingering uncertainty around the reopening of schools.

According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the National Coronavirus Command Council is yet to make a decision on when schools should reopen their doors.

Pupils across the country are expected back in the classroom on January 27, while private schools are expected back a week earlier.

On Monday, Ramaphosa addressed the nation where he kept most of the current level 3 regulations in place.

This includes a ban on indoor and outdoor gatherings, fuelling uncertainty for the education sector.

“As schools and other educational institutions prepare to begin the new academic year, there is understandably concern about whether this is advisable in the midst of a second wave of infections,” Ramaphosa said.

“The National Coronavirus Command Council is dealing with this issue, and we will provide guidance on this matter in the coming days.”

Ramaphosa further raised concerns about the impact of funerals in the spreading of Covid-19.

“There are certain rituals that we perform in line with our respective cultures and traditions; not just at the funeral itself but in the days leading up to the burial. But these are all things we simply cannot do at this time,” Ramaphosa said.

He added funeral attendance is still capped at 50 mourners.

“There will be a time when we can go to the home of the deceased to pay our respects, and to sympathise properly with our neighbours, friends and relatives. But for now, it is best and safer to stay at home.

“Funerals may not be attended by more than 50 people, and there needs to be social distancing, hand sanitising and mask wearing.”

Other gatherings including social, religious, political, traditional council meetings and gatherings at sports grounds remain banned under level 3.
