Ramaphosa a no-show at ANC’s KZN conference

President Cyril Ramaphosa was expected to deliver his message to delegates at the ANC’s provincial conference in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

But on Sunday morning it was confirmed by Siboniso Duma, the newly elected chairperson of the party in the province, that Ramaphosa would not be in attendance on the final day of the conference.
According to Duma the president cannot deliver the closing message at the conference as he has “other commitments”.
Ramaphosa was expected to receive a frosty reception from delegates, who sang the name of his predecessor, former president Jacob Zuma, at various times during the conference.
The new top 5 leadership is also seen as more sympathetic to the former president.
UKZN political analyst Fikile Vilikazi says the road to the ANC’s elective conference in December has become steeper for both Ramaphosa and KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala.
“It’s going to be a challenging journey for them, if the politics of sectionalism continue themselves in the journey of the December conference. Their leadership is at stake, they are questioning whether this new leadership will continue keeping Zikalala as a premier, or they will probably appoint someone else, because they have that power.
“It leaves them in an internal opposition position within the ANC. They will have to do a lot of hard work if they want to defeat the radical economic transformation section.”
