Ramaphosa optimistic about Eskom recovery amid ‘hiccups’

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is optimistic that the crisis at Eskom is being attended to with the urgency is deserves.
Ramaphosa told a contingency of media in Mbombela on Monday that work is being done to speed up the procurement of 4000MW additional capacity to the South African power grid.
The commitment comes hours after the embattled power utility announced it would implement stage 2 load shedding from Monday.
He admitted the rolling blackouts at Eskom remain a sore point but reiterated work was being done to turn the power utility around.
“Once we’ve got the additional 4000MW we are in a much better position. This is important for the economy and the people of South Africa. We want to see this resolves.
“There will be hiccups, there will be some ups and downs as we have said in the past but the matter is being addressed, it’s being handled,” Ramaphosa added.
Ramaphosa is in Mpumalanga to meet with the ANC structures in the province after the provincial executive committee collapsed last week.
A provincial task team has since been set up as the members prepare to head into an elective conference soon.
There is still some uncertainty about the date of the conference amid internal squabbles.
“The branches all gathered here and I had a wonderful exchange of views and thoughts with them. It was a most wonderful meeting. There was a display of unity, of purpose in the meeting.
“There’s broad agreement that the conference should be held as soon as possible. They will get a date soon.
“They seem very keen and ready to go to conference which we are grateful for because they’ve done all the predatory work at branch level which is good and they do qualify to go to conference.
It will be the provinces first elective conference since 2015 when David Mabuza was elected chairperson.
“There has been quite a bit of unity amongst them and I stretched the benefits of unity amongst them and to choose a leadership that will unify the province and that will take the province forward,” Ramaphosa added.
