Ramaphosa uses prospect of Eskom’s recovery to power up ANC

It’s now down to the voters on Monday while political parties will have to sit back and hope their weeks of campaigning paid off.

Less than 24 hours to go to the big day, party officials were still on the ground in a last ditch attempt to drum up support ahead of the local government elections.

With tough competition from the opposition parties, the ANC left nothing to chance as the party sent President Cyril Ramaphosa on a final round of electioneering.

Ramaphosa’s final stop was in the West Rand in Gauteng where he was met by a large crowd of supporters gathered near the Chief Mogale Hall in Krugersdorp.

Dressed in ANC regalia, the party supporters shouted their grievances to Ramaphosa as he addressed them, including a lack of job opportunities, poor service delivery and unreliable electricity supply.

During his final plea for votes, Ramaphosa was at pains to explain the two-fold electricity crisis.

“When load shedding hits, it affects the whole country. That is a general problem that we are trying to fix so that there is a reliable supply if energy,” he said.

“Where we are, there is a problem of illegal connections. These connections only make the situation worse.”

But he vowed to residents their electricity woes were being attended to.

Despite acknowledging the crisis, he also applauded power utility Eskom for working around the clock to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.

When voting stations open on Monday, South Africans will elect more than 10,000 councillors to take up seats at 257 municipal councils.

This includes 8 metropolitan councils, 44 district councils and 205 local councils.
