Ramaphosa to visit disaster-hit Jagersfontein on Monday
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the community of the Jagersfontein-Charlesville area in the Free State to assess the damage caused by a mudslide that killed three people and swept away nine houses.
A mine dam collapsed in the Kopanong Local Municipality on Sunday leaving dozens of people homeless.
Ramaphosa is also expected to engage with affected residents who have lost their livelihoods.
"The president’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of three people who lost their lives in the incident which allegedly involved a pipe burst from a mine at Jagersfontein. Four persons have been reported missing while 23 patients have been treated for hypothermia and four for broken legs,” says spokesperson Vincent Magwenya
Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has deployed the National Disaster Management Centre to Jagersfontein to provide assistance and assess the extent of the damage.
Spokesperson Lungi Mtshali urged residents to remain calm and those not affected by the disaster to help those affected.
