Rand Water confident of contingency plans to prevent dry taps
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Water utility, Rand Water says the Department of Human Settlements and Water and Sanitation have put contingency plans in place to ensure that there is no interruption in the supply of raw water until the end of November.
This comes while the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel is shut down to allow for inspection and maintenance.
Rand Water has committed to working with municipalities in Gauteng, North West, Free State and Mpumalanga over water management.
The utility's spokesperson, Justice Mohale, says the shutdown started on 1 October and is expected to last until 30 November.
"The tunnel will be shut down and drained for inspection and maintenance purposes, thus suspending water transfers into the Integrated Vaal River System," says Mohale.
He adds that the Integrated Vaal River system from which the water utility sources its raw water via the Vaal Dam is currently at 76 percent capacity.
