'Number of road fatalities in Gauteng not okay'
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says
the number of festive season road accidents in the province have already
exceeded last year's statistics.
Nkosi-Malobane called an urgent press briefing on Wednesday to share the provinces' road fatalities report, alongside Johannesburg Metro Police and Gauteng Traffic Police.
''Unfortunately, the picture of the provinces' road is not okay.
''We have exceeded the number of road fatalities of 2016's statistics.''
She says the main contributing factors to the carnage on the roads are drunk driving and speeding.
The MEC says government will intensify its efforts to curb deaths on the roads for the remainder of the festive season.
''We have instructed our officers to go in full force in making sure that the number of road blocks are increased.''
