Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the three armed men entered the tote in Bayview in Chatsworth. As they were robbing employees and grabbing cash, another employee ran to the Bayview police station, located on higher ground opposite the tote.

"Police officers as well as the Station Commander swiftly proceeded to the tote. It is alleged that the suspects fired at police and police returned fire."

He said that one of the men, believed to be 25 years old, was killed in the shoot-out.

Police recovered three revolvers and an undisclosed amount of cash from the suspects which had allegedly been taken from the tote. Police were not injured during the shoot-out.

Zwane said the firearms would be sent for ballistic testing.

The two arrested men face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder and are expected to appear in court soon.

An inquest docket was also opened to investigate the death of the robber.
