Rohde sentence: Justice has prevailed, says NPA

The National Prosecuting Authority has expressed its satisfaction with the sentence handed to property mogul Jason Rohde by the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

Rohde was sentenced to an effective 20 years imprisonment for the murder of his wife Susan Rohde and then staging it as a suicide in 2016.

The NPA’s Eric Ntabazalila believes the sentence sends a strong message as the country battles to bring down the alarmingly high rate of femicide.

He adds that the time has now come for the family to find closure and mourn Susan’s death.

“The NPA will also like to thank the 23 witnesses who testified and provided credible and reliable evidence. This has assisted the court with the sentencing of Rohde.”

Ntabazalila says the NPA would oppose any possible appeal by Rohde.

“We believe that no other court would come to a different conclusion and we believe that there is no other person who was responsible for the murder and that Susan did not commit suicide.

“Rohde killed his wife in a very gruesome manner in that she didn’t die immediately. He sat there and watched her die, then he staged a crime scene where he tried to put a hairdryer cord around her neck. He then tried to hang her behind the toilet door as though she committed suicide.”
