SA condemns Orlando killings, sends condolences to the US

The South African government on Monday condemned the Sunday morning massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, saying the incident made evident the extreme levels of intolerance towards people in the LGBTI community.
“The attack, which was targeted at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community, shows extreme levels of intolerance,” a statement from the department of international relations and cooperation (Dirco) said.
“South Africa fully recognises the rights of the LGBTI community and condemns in the strongest possible terms any violent attack targeted at the community.”
Dirco said Zuma had sent a message of condolences to the US government.
“The South African government and people stand with the people of the United States, particularly the families of those that have lost their lives, during this difficult time,” President Jacob Zuma was quoted as saying.
“We wish all the injured speedy recoveries. We strongly condemn all forms of terrorism, particularly this incident which has claimed so many innocent lives.”
On Sunday morning, 50 people were shot dead by 29-year-old Omar Mateen and a further 53 injured. According to Mateen’s father, the killings followed Mateen seeing two men kissing. Meanwhile, terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, referring to Mateen as one of their fighters. - ANA
