SA records 5000 new Covid-19 cases

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 5 668 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours leading up to Tuesday evening.

This brings the country’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 3 534 131.


A total of 40 487 tests were conducted.


The institute says the latest increase represents a 14% positivity rate.


 An additional 119 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 92,649.


KwaZulu-Natal is leading with 1 432 new infections.


“The majority of new cases today are from Kwa-Zulu Natal (25%), followed by Gauteng (23%). Western Cape accounted for 20%; Eastern Cape accounted for 10%; Free State accounted for 6%; Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 4% respectively; and Northern Cape accounted for 3% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.


There has been 255 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.


On the vaccine front, 86 613 vaccines were administered on Tuesday.
