SA records decline in new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate also down

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 1 151 new Covid-19 cases in the latest 24 hours reporting cycle, showing another decline in the daily number of new infections.

According to the latest report published by the NICD on Monday evening, this represents a 7.4% positivity rate.


This brings the country’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 659 698.


Gauteng is leading with 459 new cases.


“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (40%), followed by North West and Western Cape, each accounting for 17%. Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; Free State accounted for 4%. Eastern Cape and Limpopo each accounted for 2% respectively, and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” says the  NICD in a statement.


The National Department of Health has reported another backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.


It has reported 137 Covid-19 related deaths and of these, seven occurred over the past 24 – 48 hours.


This brings the total fatalities to 98,804


There has been an increase of 42 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 3 175 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.
