SA records over 500 Covid-19 related deaths

South Africa has recorded another sharp increase in Covid-19 related deaths – with 516 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
So far, 68 192 people have died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 16240 new Covid-19 infections were reported on Wednesday evening.
The institute says the increase represents a 27.5% positivity rate.
A total of 59 068 new tests were conducted on Wednesday.
Gauteng has recorded an increase of 5 219 new Covid-19 cases.
The province account for 32% of the country’s total infections, followed by the Western Cape with 21% and KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 11%.
There has been an increase of 831 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
The NICD says 17 286 people are currently receiving treatment in both public and private hospitals.
On the vaccine front, 257 492 vaccines were administered on Wednesday.
