SAA to oppose R12 million judgment

The South African Airways (SAA) says it intends to oppose a judgment by the Zimbabwe High Court ordering it to pay more than R12 million to that country’s environment ministry.

The ruling was made after a six-year-long legal battle over meteorological fees owed to the government.

Zimbabwean media reported that SAA had been using international airports in Harare and Victoria Falls since 2006 without paying a meteorological fee demanded by the environment ministry.

The airline's spokesperson Tlali Tlali confirmed plans to oppose the judgment by the Zimbabwean court.

"SAA’s legal representatives in Zimbabwe have filed an appeal against the judgment in the Supreme Court.

"There will therefore be no action that can be taken against SAA, until the determination of the case by the Supreme Court.”

According to Tlali, meteorological fees are charges levied on airlines for the provision of meteorological (weather) information used for flight navigation.
