SAA pilots could down tools

South African Airways (SAA) pilots have threatened to go on strike should the national carrier fail to implement certain changes.

It would be the first time ever that SAA pilots down tools.

The SAA Pilots’ Association conducted an independent survey at the airline in June.

The survey found that 91% of pilots felt the operations management was either poor or extremely poor, while 96% were in favour of taking a stand to force change at the airline.

The association's chairperson Grant Back says they've sent a list of demands to the airline in August, including the appointment of an experienced CEO within 90 days.

Back add they've had previous meetings with the airline but no changes have taken place.

The association says the aim is not to add to SAA's problems, but to put an end to the continual pressure on the fiscus in the form of bailouts and guarantees and, ultimately, to help put the airline on the road to recovery.
