This follows SABC's decision to reject the CWU's demand for a 9% salary increase.

The Broadcasting Electronic Media and Allied Workers' Union accepted a 6% wage increase offer, but the CWU has been holding out for its initial 9% demand.

The union’s bargaining coordinator, Nathan Bowers, says they would have been willing to accept the SABC’s wage offer if it was backdated to 1 April 2023, but the public broadcaster has remained silent.

"We have tried to engage the minister of communication and digital technologies through Cosatu's general secretary. We have tried to engage, but nowhere are we getting any joy from the powers that be.”

Meanwhile, in a statement released by the SABC, it says the CCMA has issued the default picketing rules, which are yet to be signed by both parties before a certificate of non-resolution can be issued.

"Therefore, there is no certificate of non-resolution which would essentially enable CWU to issue a strike notice following balloting of their members, as contained in the press release issued by CWU and reported by the media" the statement read.
