Maupi passed away on Thursday after spending the past two months in hospital.

The cause of death is not yet known at this stage.

He was the host of popular Current Affairs show Hlokwa La Tsela on Thobela FM.

Maupi started his journalism career at Mohodi FM and later joined the SABC in the early 2000 where he was loved for his robust interaction with government officials when tackling service delivery issues affecting communities in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Gauteng.

"We are bereft of words of comfort as Matome Maupi was one of a kind- an intersection of assertiveness and humility packed in a human being," said SABC regional manager Oupa Mamabolo.

"For the time being, SABC Limpopo would like to give the Maupi family some space to process his untimely death and to start with preparations for the funeral.

"On behalf of Management, I strenuously convey the SABC’s condolences to the family and friends, our Head of News, Jubie Matlou, and his great team who are engulfed in intense grief."

Former colleague at the station Thipa Selala described Matome as a walking Sepedi encyclopedia.

"When I joined the SABC in 2007 he was tasked with training me, and he did an exceptional job. He was a diligent man; his cheerful personality will be missed. He was energetic and worked like a man possessed with extra ordinary vision. He had an exceptional courage and unmatched passing for radio. May God rest his soul."

His memorial and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
