“The SACP has received with great sadness the news of the passing away of Comrade Ramón Castro Ruz, the elder brother of Comrades Fidel and Raul Castro,” the party said.

“Comrade Ramon passed away on the morning of Tuesday, 23 February, at the age of 91. The SACP sends its condolences to the entire Castro family and the people of Cuba on the sad loss.”

Ramon was imprisoned by the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in 1953. During the revolutionary struggle he worked with the July 26th Movement and organised one of the supply networks for the Frank País Second Eastern Front.

Following the triumph of the Revolution in January 1959, Ramon undertook various activities at different levels of the agricultural sector, particularly in the fields of sugar cane production and livestock.

The SACP said Ramon as a true internationalist to the end. His work as a revolutionary was an important contribution to the working class struggle for socialism.

“The SACP deeps its red flag in salute of this revolutionary for his contribution in the fight against imperialism. The working class shall forever be grateful to the Castro family for having selflessly released their son, brother, father, and comrade into the struggle.”
