SACP not consulted over Zandile Gumede's deployment as MPL
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The South African Communist Party (SACP) says it wasn't consulted on the decision to deploy former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
Gumede is out on bail after she and several others were charged with fraud and corruption in connection with a Durban Solid Waste tender.
Despite the charges hanging over her head she was sworn in as an MPL on Wednesday.
She replaced Ricardo Mthembu, who recently succumbed to Covid-19.
The SACP's Sifiso Gwala says the ANC is contradicting itself on the subject of corruption.
"In KwaZulu-Natal there is what we call the provincial deployment committee, where all alliance partners are a party of six. “
He says the ANC, SACP and Cosatu would sit there and deal with issues of deployment, current deployment and recall.
"But in this case, we only heard in the media that there was a swearing-in of comrade of Zandile.
"We do not necessarily need to actually agree with everything that is proposed but communication is key."
